Gingerbread Cookies

There’s something about the idea of having another Christmas in July that has always appealed to me. That’s why, the other day I decided to make this recipe to help make it feel like the idea was even remotely possible. With a bit of ice-cold milk, some festive music, a red and green dress, and a few friends, these cookies really did make it seem like Christmas was nearby.

C.O  Bigelow Lipshine in Ultra MenthaCinnamint, and Spearmint: $7.50 each or buy 2 get 1 free (3/$15)

A lot of the times, I forget about chapstick after the damaging cold of the winter passes, but this summer, my lips were still in need of some serious hydration. Thankfully, these tasty and refreshing lip-shines are just what they needed to stay de-chapped and fresh. The delicious gloss instantly gives you a “healed lip look” and easily glides on to soften and soothe your lips. Whenever I stop by the store, I pick up my favorite flavor, cinnamint. Not only does it work wonders, but it gives you an intense burst of breath-freshening benefits. A tic tac for your lips.

If you haven’t already noticed, my sweet tooth easily manipulates me. I remember trying to go on a no man-made food diet once (strictly veggies, fruits, meats, etc). I got through breakfast and lunch fine, but by dinner I was having Kraft mac and cheese, a large loaf of bread, and delicious coffee gelato. Because today was long, busy, and hectic (not to mention a bit too hot to handle) I decided to sweeten it up a bit by making ice cream. Coffee and chocolate are a big part of my life so I found this recipe online and it met all my requirements.

There’s something about summer foods that tastes so fresh, cool, and delicious. When else can you bite into delicious barbecue, enjoy fruit tart on the patio, or simply nibble on grilled cheese sandwiches and watermelon at a picnic with loved ones? One thing I’ve always enjoyed about our house, is the small garden in the backyard. Every year, we grow a variety of fruits, vegetables, and spices we use in a few recipes. One of the simplest is a tomato, basil, mozzarella salad. You can definitely taste the freshness of the tomato and the basil, and with one trip to the farmer’s market, we had quality mozzarella for the finishing touch. With just a sprinkle of salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and a drizzle of quality extra virgin olive oil, this salad is ready to accompany any summer dinner or stand alone as a healthy, midday snack.

The other day, I was looking through my collection of old movies and came across my collection of Disney princess films. I quickly shoved one into the DVD player and watched as a great portion of my childhood replayed before my eyes. Now, as much as I wish I could run around in little glass slippers, a tiara, and big poofy dresses, it’s unfortunately not possible. However, as I watched, I found that there was so much inspiration in their picture perfect outfits and tried to incorporate their style into our everyday wear.

The Story of Snow White:

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was originally a Brother’s Grimm tale. In the Disney version, Snow White, a beautiful girl with hair black as ebony, skin white as snow, and lips red as blood, is forced to run away from her home when her step mother, the queen, is jealous of her beauty sends a huntsman to kill her. Because of her kindness and beauty however, he could not kill her, and told her to flee. She soon finds herself in a small house owned by seven dwarfs who, after falling in love with her beauty, kindness, and ability to cook and tell stories, let her remain in their home. However, when the queen asks her magic mirror who the fairest maiden in the land is and he tells her it is snow white, she sets off to kill her herself. Disguised as an old lady, the queen gives snow white a poisonous apple telling her that a single bite will make any of her dreams come true. The second she takes a bite, she falls into an enchanted sleep. The dwarfs find it too difficult to bury her and so, leave her in a glass coffin so that all can come and admire her beauty. Many months pass and one day, the prince and man she loves sees her and kisses her. She is then magically revived because “true love” is the most powerful force of all. The prince then takes snow white to his kingdom, and they live happily ever after.

Snow White Fashion:

For most of the movie, we see Snow White in her classic blue yellow and red dress. She uses these three main colors for a bold, feminine touch. In the very beginning of the film, we see her in brown robes and a white apron as she sweeps floors and sings into a well. More to keep in mind: she is known for her red, red lips, white face, dark hair, and rosy cheeks.

Though these past few days have been so busy, I haven’t even had time to check my voicemail, they’ve been incredible. I left the windy city early Tuesday morning to drive to the university of Toronto. However, before arriving, I spent a day at the beautiful falls enjoying the warm summer weather and cool Canada breeze. I took several pictures of the waters and gorgeous u of t architecture, but until I post them, I’ve been spending this relaxing morning reading one of my favorite books, Grimm’s fairy tales.

I’ve never been a sucker for chapstick having always preferred gloss (particularly c.o. bigellow’s cinnamint lip shine) however when I discovered eos products, I quickly changed my mind. At first, the oddly shaped balms were a bit of a draw back, but I’ll admit they are what caught my attention. I bought myself a “smoothing sphere” in “strawberry sorbet” and it was definitely love at first swipe. Now my only problem is trying to not re-apply every 5 seconds.
